Some years ago, perhaps in 2007, I argued that one reason we remain a frustrated people is that we are abandoning our traditions (reality) and living some kind of illusion called democracy as if our traditions are not democratic. I argued that Malawi does not need councillors. Instead, we should utilise our traditional governance structures made up of mwini mbumba, village head, group village head etc. Still my case. I don’t know my ward councillor. I am sure he does not know me. But my village head in Balaka knows me. He knows how many children my parents have and where each one of us is living. The village head know where my sisters are buried. Our traditional governance system is practically perfect. Izi za ma ward councillor ndi za kwa azungu komwe kulibe unyakwawa kapena za mtauni ngati Blantyre ndi Lilongwe. Sadly, we have destroyed our traditional governance systems. We pay traditional leaders and the system is corrupt. I long for a presidential candidate who shall campaign to stop paying traditional leaders, amend the constitution to remove local polls and utilise our traditional governance structures.
