Somebody had a good idea here, but then something went a bit wrong. Possibly, we reckoned, this was because the star of the film, Jake Gyllenhaal, was a producer and, therefore, the director had trouble controlling him. So Gyllenhalls character, who seems to have Aspergers and a violent streak, gradually becomes more unreal, more outgoing, more strangely funny and less credible. As a result, he does not convey the menace which the part requires. So although we paid attention throughout, and enjoyed much of it, we were left with an uneasy feeling about the balance between humour and horror, and the film soon slipped from our minds..
