Somehow I think that if a White 18-year-old male student had shoplifted less than $2 in cigars from a store, and then later that day was shot 8 times (including in the back while unarmed and running away) by a Black cop, the language of a lot of people about the incident would be quite different from what it is now. huffingtonpost/2014/08/14/media-black-victims_n_5673291.html We’d see a MUCH greater effort to put the teen’s dysfunctional behavior into perspective, and would be much less quick to try to tie his murder to his character. Instead, we’d be seeing many more attempts to contextualize the aberrant behavior like this one: “Shoplifting is a greater problem than ever, driven up by high teen unemployment and tighter family budgets.
