Someone asked, "Is meditation the same thing as prayer?" Answer: That is a great question. There are many opinions on the difference between prayer and meditation. In fact, prayer means different things to different people. For me, and I believe for most people, meditation is about inner silence. Most of the time our minds are streaming an incessant flow of chatter; chatter about what’s not working in our lives, problems at work, our To Do list, what people think of us and on and on the mind chatter goes. In his book The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle explains, "This incessant mental noise prevents you from finding that realm of inner stillness that is inseparable from Being." During meditation we are not fighting against the mind chatter, instead we allow ourselves to experience and expand those moments of silence in between the chatter. The moments of stillness can also be a time to listen for Divine guidance and answers. Meditation helps develop our consciousness, increase levels of inner peace, and help us feel more relaxed. Some people focus on their breathing, a mantra, a prayer, etc. during meditation to help them stay centered. Prayer is usually different for some people because during prayer they are not focused on silence and inner stillness. Some people choose to pray and meditate separately.
