Someone asked me if I am now going to play a five stringed bass because I help to participate in the building of one for Cort Guitars. I answered that I dont play one, but I helped to design one because other people play it. Francois Perrier commented on my statement and said, To all those who need proof Jeff Berlin has consideration for other views opinions styles etc.......read above ! This caught my attention because I always consider what people prefer in their musical lives. You may notice that my comments are rarely about the art that one choses to play or the different ways that they choose to play it. I rarely have an opinion about what one likes to listen to or what one likes to play. However, I do have an opinion about how one is taught. While I do recognize the kind intentions of teachers, from name players and name schools imparting new ways to play the bass down to the interested teacher in a music store, I have to say that I think that most have compromised their students having a chance at a career, let alone having even the most basic skills to extract some musical pleasure out of their instrument. I would like this to change. .
