Someone asked me the other night why I liked Xena and I gave a basic answer, but the question had stuck in my mind. I know Ive always related to the character; same goes for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my favorite parts about X-Men, and my identification with Charmed. All pretty different shows with different methods, mythologies, and metaphors. But the common thread: they fight. They fight for whats right, for the greater good, and for those who cant fight for themselves. I saw a post today that said something along the lines that with so much going on in the world, to pray for peace. And my first thought was I dont believe in peace and I was somewhat startled at this and had to think a little deeper. And again the Xena question came to mind. And I had to rephrase my own statement to myself: I dont believe peace comes without having to fight for it and to preserve it. As long as human beings retain free will and emotion, there will be hate and envy and fear and the misguided need to wipe out whats different or take from another. There is evil in this world, from humans and elsewhere. And you have to fight to protect from that. If you want to send love and hope for the best and turn the other cheek, you may get slapped and trampled. The fight doesnt go away just because you turn away from it. Someone/something threatens and you turn your back, it doesnt cease to exist--and you very well could be stabbed, sliced, shot, run through, or zapped. I know not everyone will agree with this. I dont expect that. Just as I know not everyone can or will fight. Some are unable, some cant stomach the price that comes with it. They are the allies, the caretakers, the ones who keep the homefires burning. They are the ones that the rest of us fight for. Im not talking in military or patriotic or political terms here. Im talking fighting the good fight. Protecting the ones we love, the world we love, and the ones who cant--for whatever reason--fight for themselves. Xena is a good example too of the price that comes with it. And that line that your toes are always straddling. Fighting only when you have to and for the right reasons. I dont mean attacking anyone unprovoked by any means at all. Or using unnecessary brute force or violence. It means defending with the same that was directed to you. Be that physically or by spiritual means. I will not nor endorse to anyone to harm an innocent person or unjustly attack anyone, no matter how you may personally feel about them. But I dont believe we can love away a threat or aggressor nor defend yourself by doing nothing. If that is what works for you, by all means DO IT. The world does need more love!! You can disagree with me if you like, but as long as were both focused on that greater good then we are on the same side as far as Im concerned. Spread the love and peace! As for me, I will fight.
