Someone commented on my Calorie Count article yesterday about how affected she is by critical comments some people make about weight and body image. For example, hearing something like, She was so attractive until she let herself go or critical comments about someones weight, would trigger her to feel sad and slip into unhealthy habits. Since you may feel the same, I wanted to respond here, too. There always will be people who say inappropriate things. But they dont have to affect how you feel about yourself. Really. Those comments affect you because of a vulnerability within that gets triggered. But what we focus our attention on grows, so when you keep your attention on those comments, you deepen and expand your own dissatisfaction and sadness. The best antidote to that kind of judgment and negativity is to make a commitment to keep a boundary between you and those comments. Dont let them invade your mind. When you hear those things, say to yourself something like, Thank you for reminding me to support my body. That may be your experience, but its not mine. I choose to focus on all that is right and beautiful about my body. Be persistent with this. Make sense? Will you keep a strong boundary between you and judgmental comments?
