Someone robbed us again this week. They only stole some - TopicsExpress

Someone robbed us again this week. They only stole some rubber mats and bits and pieces (we had them out the back drying because... who would steal old rubber mats right?!). They tried to break down the door & window but didnt get inside. The crazy thing is if they came during the day and asked for help they would have received more than any possible resale value on dirty old mats... Theres a few people who come in for tucker tokens that have told me that they live off of stealing from the homes and businesses around Aspley. I tell them that they dont need to steal because they can get free food here at the cafe. Ive seen a few people break down in tears over that. Theres a bigger issue here I wanna bring up. If people choose to steal and get caught in Qld we punish them with fines or imprisonment. Prison is a punishment for theft. Its not the solution. When it costs us $318 every day to keep a thief behind bars they have to be stealing $319+ 7 days a week for it to be a financially beneficial strategy... most thieves dont steal that much. Noone really wants to be in a situation where they feel they have to steal. I think we can build a culture here where these people feel loved enough that they would prefer to ASK than steal. I personally believe in blessing those that curse you. Its very likely that the person who tried to break down our door is one of the regular people who receive free food. Infact Ive got a good idea who it is... Im not going to punish them. Im going to continue to LOVE them. If we can win them over it saves us $318 a day. If we win them over theyll stop stealing from our backyards & businesses. But, most importantly, if we win them over, we win a friend. And if we do this together we can build a truly great community.
