Something a bit different:- At the start of World War 2, John McLachlan of 3 Baker Street, was the first soldier from Hawick to be reported missing in action in early 1940, and eventually notified by the Red Cross to his mother as a prisoner of war. He was one of the first to be called up for action, having been a member of the Territorials, and had also joined the Coldstream guards prior to declaration of War in September 1939. Sent overseas to France and onwards through to Belgium in early 1940, to repel the German advance as it made its way through Europe and occupied France with the goal of securing the French ports - as a hop, step and a jump to invading Great Britain - he was captured during an assault on a German gun position, and subsequently taken to Germany and imprisoned in Stalag Luft 14B. He was eventually repatriated due to severe ill health and spent many months in hospital before returning home to Baker Street. His young daughter Patricia, when he arrived home, said to her mother, Vera who is that man?
