Something alarming happened on Thursday morning. Please read: We were driving along a quiet country road in the Lake District and turned a corner to find an elderly man lying on his back in the middle of the road. Panicking, we stopped the car immediately and ran over to him. I rang 999 and Gareth started doing CPR and shouted for help. The mans eyes were open and not blinking, he had no pulse and no heartbeat. He was not breathing and his extremities were turning purple. The mans neighbours came out and got upset, saying Hes gone...oh my god, hes gone, we must tell his son but the 999 operator insisted Listen to me, not them - keep doing chest compressions. Keep doing CPR which Gareth did. Four First Responders, an ambulance, an air ambulance and several paramedics later and the man was airlifted to hospital by helicopter. All we knew was that he was 74 and had suffered a heart attack as he was gardening by the roadside and we were the first to find him. Today (48 hours later) we found out that the man has survived, due to the prompt CPR action which saved his life. My message is that if you are faced with a casualty who you are being told has gone, please please please start CPR because you may just save that persons life. nhs.uk/Conditions/Accidents-and-first-aid/Pages/CPR.aspx
