Something interesting : Cherenkov radiation, electromagnetic - TopicsExpress

Something interesting : Cherenkov radiation, electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle, for instance an electron, passes through a dielectric medium at a speed greater than the phase velocity of light in that medium. The charged particles ionize the molecules of that medium (which then turn back rapidly to their ground state emitting radiation in the process). Cherenkov radiation is continuous, unlike fluorescence. Here, besides Cherenkov emission, fluorescence is induced from Fluorescein dissolving in water during irradiation. A scientific breakthrough may give the field of radiation oncology new tools to increase the precision and safety of radiation treatment in cancer patients by helping doctors see the powerful beams of a linear accelerator as they enter or exit the body. -- phys.org/news/2014-01-scientific-team-human-body-cherenkov.html#jCp
