Something large seems to have died right near this house. I was thinking perhaps the compost needed a little turning, sitting inside at my desk, doors open, and then a friend next door wrote an e-mail about it. It is sometimes very strong, and sometimes a little more fishy than mammalian, and sometimes seems to (briefly) disappear. Another friend thinks he smelled it last night too. I drove up and down the street but theres no obvious roadkill. It could be a bear with indigestion, holed up in the vacant lot across from us, I suppose. Really, really bad indigestion...
