Sometimes I gripe about living in Pocahontas County because we do - TopicsExpress

Sometimes I gripe about living in Pocahontas County because we do have a lack of industry/jobs etc and we do tend to attract some oddball groups sometimes. However, today I was driving through town and it hit me how lucky I am to live in a such a nice small community. While Pocahontas County doesnt offer a Wal-Mart, movie theater or slew of fast food chains, there is something to be said about this beautiful place that I live. When I walk into The Greenbrier Grill the waitress comes over to my table with my drink because she knows what Im going to order. Every morning I drive by Richardsons and the storekeepers wave to me as they sweep off the sidewalks (thats generally after Ive driven through town behind John Leyzorek going 15 miles an hour ;). I went to the bank today and the teller reminded me of the high school band concert this evening (Candy Harper). Then I went to the BOE to deliver some paperwork and when I came back to my car the UPS delivery guy flagged traffic so that I could get backed out onto the road. Only here in this small town will a police officer drop what hes doing to investigate the stolen chili from the little league concession stand. Only here will the courthouse janitor stop me to ask how my kids are doing. Only here would my kid jump out of the car at school in the morning and holler, yay, theres Miss Tabby TaBeatha McCoy). Only in Marlinton will traffic stop in both directions to allow a family of ducks to cross to the river. Only in Pocahontas County can Brian Tankersley rescue a tennis shoe from the intersection and 42 other people recognize it. Only here can a little ole lady named Ruth become a part of your extended family solely based on your interaction at Dories Diner. Only in Marlinton will Robbie Sharp (Robbie the Mailman) bring you your food at Rayettas Lunchbox. This is a community where hundreds of people will show up for a dinner to raise money for a sick citizen, where Johnny Sharp will open up Miss Kittys II so a private group can have one more for Cindy Sharp. This is a place where everyone knows your name, waves and speaks to each other. Little Mayberry towns like this are few and far between and even thought its frustrating at times, Im happy to be a part of this little community.
