Sometimes I wonder why I bother. I was just watching #msnbc the #alexwitt show. She was discussing the Cuba issue with a Black congressman. In inquiring about the timing of the policy change she referenced a chart they put up that showed an increase in the numbers of Cubas political prisoners going from 2k+ to 8k+ over 6 or 8 years. She was suggesting that they have too much in the way of human rights issues for us to normalize relations with them. Of course, she failed to mention at all the fact that there are tens of thousands of citizens here imprisoned for one marijuana related offence or other. This despite the total lack of credible science showing any individual or societal damage from the use of that freely growing weed. I personally cannot find it in me to consider the victims of that particular public travesty anything but political prisoners. The racial dynamic in play, minorities being hugely over represented, just make it that much uglier and obviously political. So it just might be that the U.S. is ill-advised to cast that particular stone. I mean, ignoring the facts of our trade and diplomatic agreements with regimes with much more questionable records on human rights. And of course, you have to be a special kind of stupid to think of that as something a liberal station would air.
