Sometimes a second opinion can really help. I recently had a routine check up at a clinic in NW Indiana, where I live now, just 50 miles outside of downtown Chicago. It was a yearly routine check up, no big deal, but they found out that I had uterine cancer. What a surprise, and they told me I would need a hysterectomy and chemo and radiation and I was terrified. So because I had lived in Chicago for several years and still had a group of doctors at Nortwestern who had treated me for Lupus and other things, I thought, Well, I am sure not going to mess around with cancer here with some doctors I hardly know in Indiana, I am going back to downtown Chicago for treatment with folks I know, because this sounds scary and serious. So we took the extra time to drive into downtown, so I could go to the Maggie Daley Cancer Center for Women at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and when the Oncologist there checked me out she was like Oh, its only a small spot of cancer and its in the very early stages so we will just zap the little spot out of you and then just watch it. No need for a hysterectomy, big chemo and radiation, you are in the very early stages. Youre lucky we found it now. and so I am incredibly RELIEVED to say the least, and my story just goes to show that doctors are not gods and that sometimes it helps to get more than one opinion, and if your insurance will cover it, go to the best facility that you can afford, because its your body and your health.... and theres no second chance sometimes. Im not dissing the clinic in NW Indiana I went to, and Im not saying that you cant get good, quality health care in NW Indiana, but what I am saying is that before you decide to get any major surgery, maybe its a good idea to look around a little to make sure that youre getting the best possible advice. Doctors are not gods, and they call it a PRACTICE for a reason. I am sure glad that I didnt have to have a hysterectomy for just a few abnormal cells that might or might not turn into an aggressive cancer. It was a scary time, but I am glad that my husband and I handled it the way that we did. Its your body, the only one you get. If your car were acting up and your mechanic couldnt fix it properly, wouldnt you take it to another garage? Well, your body is more important than your car... dont be afraid to go to another doctor for a 2nd opinion.
