Sometimes for my private devotions I open the hymn book & read - TopicsExpress

Sometimes for my private devotions I open the hymn book & read some of the old hymns of our faith. They tell the story of God’s love in a magnificent way. Music is such an important part of worship. The Bible says “LET THE GODLY SING FOR JOY TO THE LORD; IT IS FITTING FOR THE PURE TO PRAISE HIM.” (Psalm 33:1 NLT) I am amazed at the beauty of some people’s voices. Quite honestly I sometimes envy them. The ability to sing was not among the gifts God gave me. Still, all my life I have worshiped by singing the hymns of the faith with God’s people. In the last third of my life I have enjoyed many different types of Christian music along with the hymns. Most of my personal singing is done when I am alone in my automobile, or in my heart, where no one but God hears. In yesterday’s devotion I shared one verse of “Rescue The Perishing.” All day long I sang that hymn to myself (and to God). Although I cannot sing well enough to sing for other people, I can sing to Him. Today I share the words to another favorite hymn, “At Calvary.” It was written in 1895 by William R. Newell & Daniel B. Towner. Sing “At Calvary” with me. No, sing it alone, to God. He will be honored & you will be blessed. Years I spent in vanity and pride, Caring not my Lord was crucified, Knowing not it was for me He died on Calvary. Mercy there was great, and grace was free; Pardon there was multiplied to me; There my burdened soul found liberty at Calvary. By God’s Word at last my sin I learned; Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned, Till my guilty soul imploring turned to Calvary. Mercy there was great, and grace was free; Pardon there was multiplied to me; There my burdened soul found liberty at Calvary. Now I’ve given to Jesus everything, Now I gladly own Him as my King, Now my raptured soul can only sing of Calvary! Mercy there was great, and grace was free; Pardon there was multiplied to me; There my burdened soul found liberty at Calvary. Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan! Oh, the grace that brought it down to man! Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary! Mercy there was great, and grace was free; Pardon there was multiplied to me; There my burdened soul found liberty at Calvary.
