Sometimes its good and sometimes not so much.... There are so many reasons why social media expands our ability to connect with treasured family and friends globally, but it also supports a disconnect in personal relationships and may lead us to a less genuine kind of empathy. My real friends and I get together or find a reason to physically connect, talk on the phone, or even email one another. During those times, our hardships and accomplishments are discussed. We do so alone and without the big brother of social media watching us. I understand why people can feel sad when they check Facebook all of the time. Im guilty of that too and when I am missing those with whom I would rather have real contact, I turn to social media. To me, relationships are the most important thing in life, and I have to wonder if Facebook is a gratifying surrogate. Social media complicates interpersonal relationships in that it can seduce the user into thinking that online and in-person communication are the same. They really arent. Signing out.
