Sometimes my google alert turns up some little gems: I’m only on Chapter Two of The creation of Anne Boleyn, but already it’s fast becoming one of my favourite books. I think i’m falling in love with Susan Bardo a bit. The snarky Philippa Gregory make my heart sing and the description of David Starkey’s bias spoke to my soul. And her examples of The Tudors fans sticking up for Chapyus had me cackling. I think it makes a huge difference that she’s not a Tudor historian because she comes to it with fresh, objective eyes not the eyes of someone who has spent so long obsessing they’ve already decided on their narrative, whether they are aware of it or not. Anyway, it’s a fascinating read about the way Anne has been portrayed through the years (rather than another biography).
