Sometimes, on my FB Timeline, I start a conversation that sparks lively ... sometimes firey ... debate. Occassionally, I ask people to keep it civil. Rarely, I even delete a post that I think is deliberately aggressive. I usually take heat for doing either. Some call it censorship, and some call me an asshole. Some agree, or even thank me. In my opinion, it is my right to try to keep things civil in a thread I start, even when the agression is not directed toward me. I think foul language, obscene conversation, and name-calling have their place. I consider that to be when everyone involved is on-board, and feels safe. For example, I have no problem with foul language, obscene conversation, and name-calling, when Im with certain people. Its because I feel safe & unthreatened. Usually, when I meet someone who swears when were barely met ... maybe a cabbie ... I am genuinely offended. When conversation is heated, its easy .. for me, too ... to start getting aggressive. I always regret offending someone, even if theyve offended me. I always regret behaving aggressively toward someone, even if they did it first. My thread: My rules. Disagreement does not need to be abusive. I wish I was perfct at this concept, but its important to me to try to be.
