Sometimes progress and freedom moves at such tiny steps, that its like watching a snail trying to out run a slug. We played cat and mouse with the Soviet Navy for so long, that when I was a twenty-something I couldnt help to wonder why are we doing this? But 25 years a ago today, my mouth dropped open with shear wonder as the Berlin Wall started coming down! I remember the shootings, the attempted escapes, and the tensions between the West and, basically, the Iron Curtain. People were dieing for freedom and risked everything to make the crossing. This was a significant event beyond belief--which even today, is a symbol of some sort of frigging hope that things can, and do change for the better.history/topics/cold-war/berlin-wall
