Sometimes the old methods are effective. Recently in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management a University of Melbourne cancer patient used Calcium Carbonate crystals packed in stockings over night to reduce the swelling of oedema in his legs. The results was substantial decrease in water retention and wet through clothing and bedding. This amazed the physicians who noted no known side effects from the treatment which was performed with similar results repeatedly. However, I would point out that if one is to try to do this for oedema one should make sure of having adequate hydration levels before attempting to shift the localised fluid build up.
