Sometimes this country makes me laugh. How wonderful is it that the Youths Minister,Mr Boni Haruna,the 57 years old former governor of Adamawa State, is old enough to be my father. What does that tell us of the polity of the day?? Do these leaders really have plans for the so-called leaders of tomorrow?? You peruse through the pages of the constitution for eligible office holders and you see the blatant age discrimination in favour of the old and dying. Gowon was Head of State when he was barely 30. Is it now abominable and atrocious to have a similar scenario in present-day Nigeria? I may not have my figures correct but I doubt if we have any Confab committee member who is below 40years of age. And yet they say the essence of the National dialogue is to secure the future of Nigeria. Yes,the standard has dropped. My father in his form 5 days(the equivalent of todays SS3)could recite entire works of the legendary Shakespeare. Secondary school leavers could conveniently teach secondary school students,but today,we have graduates who do not even know the present and past tense of simple day-to-day English words. This however leads me to the question, How did this come to be?. Surely the rot did not begin today. The cracks appeared on the wall long before it finally collapsed. Who was responsible for amending the cracks as soon as they appeared? Your answer I believe,is as good as mine. To my fellow youths of today,do not wait for anybody to hand you anything on a platter. Trust me,its going to be a long wait. Live your life as if nobody owes you anything. Our leaders and elders have shown in their acts and in our laws that they do not have much plans for us. Go out and carve a niche for yourself by any HONEST means necessary. I stress the need for honesty and dignity here because two wrongs cannot make a right. Work hard,pray hard and the heavens will smile on us all. May we have the wisdom to integrate the younger generation in the affairs of this great nation when we finally take charge,for charge we shall surely take! And as the muslims will say, Insha Allah Oza Enwonode A Nigerian Youth...
