Sometimes you read the reason for a dogs return and do not - TopicsExpress

Sometimes you read the reason for a dogs return and do not recognise any of those behaviours in that dog when it was in your house. Then you observe the dog over a period of time and understand why the adopters / returners made that decision or interpreted the behaviour in a certain way. The case in point is a Basset Hound that was returned for food aggression, having a pop at the resident dog, falling out with a young child and guarding doorways. I sometimes think that we fosterers have had so many problem dogs through the house that we just deal with the issues without thinking about them. I would not say that said Basset was food aggressive but you have to be careful around food. She will have a go at another dog (but not a human) if it is in her space around food. Beagle made a big mistake when he stuck his head in her food dish! She is quite dominant and will push other dogs out of the way if she wants fuss. Sometimes I would describe her actions as sneaky as she tries to get her own way and curry favour with the humans. At least I have now recognised these traits and can ensure that a future adopter understands and can cope. She is not a bad dog, just needs firm handling and to understand what is / is not acceptable behaviour!
