Sometimes you will hear advocates of the death penalty declare that its not about vengeance and blood lust, but about an abstraction called retributive justice. Then, you turn to commentary on virtually any capital case and it is awash with the sort of comments accompanying this story: Then hang him! ... or firing squad. How about I beat his ass to death then his birth defect wont interfere! Then I can work on his lawyer! He should be taught the true meaning of painSorry buddy, when you killed that guy or shot the officer did you turn to him and say Now this is gonna hurt ? Hanging sounds good. I think he should get raped a few times in prison, and killed the same way he killed them. I got plenty of ammo. Apologists for the death penalty would be far more honest if they would just come out and say We want to cling to our basest and most barbaric love of vengeance, hate, spite, and thirst for blood and not spew this crap about being paladins of cool abstract concern for law and order or, worse yet, Christian love of enemies.
