Somewhere in Egypt, my memory fails from time to time, there is an isolated Christian monastery that has stored religious documents pertaining to Christianity since the 2nd century. Their rule is simple; preserve, store and protect. Most of the monks are illiterate, follow a simple liturgy that has been handed down through the generations - but they adhere to their Rule as regards the documents with a severe fanaticism. Western researchers have only been allowed in once. No further visits have been allowed or entertained. According to the team from the university of Chicago - the library rivals the one lost at Alexandria. We lose both people and documents - and the memories of own past through our unwillingness to confront some aspects of the modern world.
