Sonerwani canal under troops’ occupation since 1990 In occupied Kashmir, the picturesque tourist resort at Sonerwani-Zainagree canal continues to be occupied by the Indian troops for the past two decades. The local people said the resort, which houses a Dak bungalow and some of the oldest Chinar trees in the region, once used to bustle with tourists but in1990, the resort was taken over by the troops. Since then it’s under their occupation. The Indian troops, without considering ecological fragility of the resort, constructed a helipad inside the resort compound. Subsequently, the resort became aBrigade Command. At present it is under Army’s 14 Rashtriya Rifles. The locals said the camp has become a major headache for them as it has blocked an easy passage to the nearby villages of Vutrina, Panzegam, Lawaypora and Ownagam. Besides the resort also connects Bandipora to Sopore, they added. Ironically, the district administration is unaware that the resort is under the Army occupation. “I will first make a visit to the place and see where this road is. Then only I can say what can be done,” Additional District Commissioner Bandipora, Tariq Ahmed Zargar, said in a media interview.
