Song For The Day - January 15, 2015 I am freakin pumped! I just bought myself a ticket earlier this evening to go see this gentleman live at the State Theatre in Kalamazoo next month. I am going to be sitting in the exact same seat that I sat in for a Mellencamp concert back in 2004 so I know Ill have a great view of the proceedings. Front Row in the Balcony, which at the State Theatre, due to the overhang, is closer to the stage than 2/3rds of the main floor seats. Id been toying with the idea of going, but tickets had been on sale for quite awhile now so I figured thered be nothing left, but there are advantages to traveling light and when I checked this evening there was one lonely seat on the front row, waiting to be purchased. So, I decided to grab it. Jason Isbell got his start pretty much by being the 3rd guitar player for the Drive-By Truckers. He spent several years with them, writing some of the bands best material at the time, before heading out on his own in 2007. To my mind, Jason writes some of the most literal, heart-felt lyrics of anybody out there right now. His songs are powerful and well told. If you close your eyes to listen to this tune tonight a movie will play inside your head as his words resonate. There are quite a few versions of this song on Youtube, but I chose this one because it was the way I first heard the tune, its live, during a concert with DBT and he tells yall about the story behind it, before singing it. Powerful song for me. I hope hell do it when he hits the State Theatre. What can you see from your window? I cant see anythin from mine Flags on the side of the highway And scripture on grocery store signs Maybe eighteen was too early Maybe thirty or forty is too Did you get your chance to make peace with the man Before He sent down his angels for you? Mamas and grand mamas love you Cause thats all they know how to do You never planned on the bombs in the sand Or sleepin in your dress blues Your wife said this all would be funny When you got back home in a week Turn twenty two and wed celebrate you In a bar or a tent by the creek Your baby would just about be here And your very last tour would be up But you wont be back, theyre all dressin in black Drinkin sweet tea in Styrofoam cups Mamas and grand mamas love you American boys hate to lose You never planned on the bombs in the sand Or sleepin in your dress blues The high school gymnasiums ready Full of flowers and old Legionnaires Nobody showed up to protest Just sniffle and stare Theres red, white and blue in the rafters And theres silent old men from the Corps What did they say when they shipped you away To fight somebodys Hollywood war? Nobody here could forget you You showed us what we had to lose You never planned on the bombs in the sand Or sleepin in your dress blues You never planned on the bombs in the sand Or sleepin in your dress blues youtu.be/aJb1_EGnapY
