Song of Solomon 5-8 continues its description of the relationship - TopicsExpress

Song of Solomon 5-8 continues its description of the relationship between Solomon and the shepherd girl who became his bride. Their great love for each other is easily seen. It is a shame that he did not marry only her and live with her all the days of his life instead of marrying many women (1 Kings 11:1-10). The chapters record descriptions of admiration from Solomon for the shepherd girl (6:4-10; 7:1-8) and her for him (5:10-16). 5:2-16 records an interesting event in their relationship. She is asleep and hears him knocking at her door. Her response is that she has gone to bed and it is too much trouble to get up and let him in (5:3-4). When he leaves she realizes that she has turned her beloved away and her heart yearns for him (5:4). She frantically runs out to seek him (5:6). The daughters of Jerusalem hear her plea for help and ask why her lover is so special (5:9). She responds with an elaborate description of him. He is the chief among ten thousand (5:10) and is altogether lovely (5:16). She must find him. This is a picture of what happens in so many relationships. Husbands and wives are too busy for each other and neglect each other until one turns away. It is then that the spouse who is left alone realizes what he or she has missed and frantically seeks to restore the relationship. In the case of Solomon and the shepherd girl the relationship is restored. That does not always happen. It is also a reminder of Christians neglecting the invitations from Christ to spend time with us in public and private worship, but we are too busy or too tired to spend time with him.
