Sonic & Knuckles Collection Stop chuckling Knuckles Sonic & Knuckles Collection came out back in 1997 exclusively for the Personal Computers. It was distributed in the restaurant chain, Jack In The Box along with other SEGA Personal Computer games like Sonic 3D Blast, Bug!, and Ecco The Dolphin. All of the games I listed are $1.99 each and are separate from the Jack In The Box kids meals. So how does Sonic & Knuckles Collection fair up to todays standard? Read on. The storyline of Sonic & Knuckles Collection is the same as the original games released three years prior on the SEGA Genesis. Dr. Ivo Robotniks Death Egg has crashed landed on a mysterious island in the middle of the ocean. Robotnik then meets a local resident there; Knuckles. Robotnik then tricks Knuckles into thinking that Sonic & Tails are the bad guys and Robotnik is the good guy. Down below, Sonic & Tails are arriving at the island. Sonic jumps off Tails Tornado and transforms into Super Sonic. Super Sonic dashes off ahead of Tails and glides towards the island until he got ambushed by Knuckles. Knuckles then takes the Chaos Emeralds ,chuckles, and leaves. I thought you said you dont chuckle, eh Knuckles? The game-play is identical to the SEGA GENESIS games so you know what to expect. But there is a noticeable difference in the music quality. To avoid copyright, SEGA decided to create a whole new soundtrack from the ground up. There are two types of music available which you can pick when you select the games at start-up: GENERAL MIDI and FM SYNTHESIZER. FM SYNTHESIZER, to me, is it is muffled whereas the GENERAL MIDI version is more cherry and upbeat and not muffled. I love Sonic & Knuckles Collection soundtrack better than the SEGA GENESIS version by a long shot. Heres a comparison of the two: GENERAL MIDI: youtube/watch?v=rV2YcmsizUA FM SYNTHESIZER youtube/watch?v=sQVK-UEY-yE Like the SEGA GENESIS soundtrack, each act has its own exclusive background music depending and it obviously changes if you pick FM SYNTHESIZER on GENERAL MIDI. The Sound Test menu is located when you windowed the game and go to the Options tab. It plays the music of the game you selected. Whats funny is that I just realized this year, by myself, that Flying Battery Zone music is located before IceCap Zone music. I know the whole story behind this, but its still funny to see this nonetheless. Now this game I played the most when my dad downloaded Sonic & Knuckles Collection illegally for me: Blue Spheres. Blue Spheres is based on the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles Special Stages and it adds new ones into the mix as well. There are endless amounts of Special Stages to play through if you need a break at work or from the main game. There is a password feature where you can copy down the code and start off from the Special Stage you were at. You can skip 10 Special Stages if you get a PERFECT, collecting all Rings and completing the Special Stage. I had a whole Wordpad full of Blue Spheres passwords until my dad deleted them. Dang you dad! Conclusion This is one of my favorite compilations, despite me not knowing what a compilation was back then. Amazing music and a fantastic little mini-game to chip time away makes this a fantastic compilation even by todays standards. Ill include a link to the patch due to it being faster on modern day computers. I wont include a download link because its illegal, so either buy it or download it yourself. 8/10
