Sophie and I are off to QMC in Nottingham again today for a few days. Shes having a test dose of a drug called baclofen put directly into her spine during a general anaesthetic. It goes in a little like an epidural. The drug should help block the bad messages being sent to her muscles from the brain stem which create the high level of spasticity and muscle tone she experiences. Hopefully it means she will be much more relaxed and her own messages for movement should be able to get through more readily. It doesnt work for everyone, hence the need for a test dose but at least well be able to rule out or rule in another method to help her and move forward. We are hopeful it will be helpful as Sophies neurologist and gastroenterologist have indicted that her startle seizures and her reflux and vomiting issues may be muscle tone related too.
