Sore muscles after yoga or any exercise, often referred to as delayed onset muscle soreness, is common for beginners or when you change up your routine. Youll likely notice soreness set in about 24 hours after a yoga session. Home treatment methods are often appropriate for relieving discomfort. If the pain gets worse or doesnt respond to treatment, contact your doctor to rule out an injury or more serious problem. Why? well the cause of muscle soreness after yoga is likely due to tiny tears that result from contracting and retracting the muscles in your body. The effect is often more pronounced in people who are new to yoga or who are returning after a lengthy break. Your muscles arent used to the movements required to hold yoga poses and tear as they adapt. Over time, youll notice less muscle soreness as your body gets used to yoga and your muscles build in strength and endurance. In most cases, alleviating muscle soreness can be done right at home. Common muscle soreness methods are good choices, but Ayurvedic ( Indian medicine) proponents believe that soreness after yoga is a buildup of energy, giving you additional treatment options. Traditional techniques include icing the area for 10 to 15 minutes several times per day, elevating the sore area to reduce swelling and taking over-the-counter pain medications to reduce pain and inflammation. Michele Khalef, a yoga therapist, suggests mixing baking soda and ground ginger in a warm bath and soaking in the mixture in a Yoga Journal article. The belief is that baking soda removes toxins from your muscles while the ginger heats them. Another option suggested by Yoga Journal is to gently massage your sore muscles with a small amount of oil. While there is no guaranteed way to prevent muscle soreness after yoga or any form of movement for that matter, preparing for your session is a good way to minimize your discomfort. Listen to your body, dont go too hard or fast, there is no competition in yoga class, just surrender and let your mind go soft and gentle, where the mind goes energy flows....... In most cases, muscle soreness after yoga is normal and doesnt require medical care. Although, continued pain may indicate a problem. If your discomfort gets worse, get to your doctor. If the pain is accompanied by a fever, redness, swelling, muscle weakness or trouble breathing, seek medical attention right away. If you experience muscle pain during, rather than after yoga, you may have pulled or strained a muscle. If this occurs, stop and contact your doctor.
