Sorry, but we have to brag a bit about one of our retired officers, Lieutenant Rollie Link (ret.). Tonight Rollie received the Ames Humanitarian award for his work in the Latino community while an Ames Police Officer. He took it upon himself to learn to speak Spanish by immersing himself in Ames Latino community. Rollie found that everyday interactions, like helping someone move, were an invaluable way to learn a new language. He wrote, you learn a lot of Spanish standing at the bottom of the stairs not wide enough for the couch. Rollie also wrote that he would never be able to fully repay the Latino community for everything he has learned from them. Rollie used his new skills to assist the Ames PD in translation and especially to help victims of crime understand the process and make sure they had a voice, even when English was a second language. Commander Huff accepted the award on Rollies behalf, as he was unable to attend the ceremony tonight. The award was presented by the Ames Human Relations Commission during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration. The audience pictures below were taken by Commander Huff so Rollie will be able to see what it was like to be up there in front of everyone. This ones for you Rollie, youre a good egg!
