Sorry no photos so: From Melbourne VIC to Alice Springs NT by car. Or Aeroguard and death. I left Melbourne on Tuesday around mid day, with full tank of 98 octane gas plus 20 litres in the trunk, also 10 litre container of water and a sattelite phone and GPS one spare wheel ( should take 2 spares if youre going) Drove through Ballerat and missed the GPS instruction, so it went mental and sent me walkie round the city like a teddy bear Eventually got me on track, and on the way to Mount Gambier SA, 1st stop, beautiful scenery, with lowering sun on the Grampian mountains, looking like Moria. Stopped overnight at a motel, in budget room right next to the highway, so poor sleep. Feeling sad about family ad friends now so far away. Next leg through SA toward Coober Pedy ( of Opal fame) On my left were hudreds of eletric windmills with no one to tilt at them on the right thousands of hectars of field bursting with sun bleached life. Coober Pedy, approached at high speed, overtaking massive road rainds 50 metres long Sign posts everywhere watch for cattle and other animals due to no fences Roads lined with truck fed carrion, all the way there, stopped at a rest stop and was immeadiatly covered in flies, Aeroguard, seemed to make no difference, except to create an horrid smell around my head and in the car. Stayed in Coober Pedy overnight, in an underground cavern motel, very nice, had some liquid refreshents and got to bed early ( kick out time at al stops 10am) The owner ( Martin told me he has been there 20 years and you never get used to them meaning the flies. A bit anxious about the final leg to Alice, due to being warned that The blackfellers will lie in the road and carjack you! Bollocks! Long drive 8 hours, or more, so I decided to stop frequently to strech the auld legs, attacked by flies and an everpresent stench of death, from former living cows and kangaroos on the roadside. Made a petrol stop at a place I cannot recall he name of, topped off the tank then sat in the shade wit a tall glass of cola and ice, pure bliss! I think I swallowed a few flies, the pub/petrol station is about 3 hours from Coober and has a tree festooned with shoes in the car park. 98 octane fuel very expensive, about $2.30 litre but worth it for the improved duration, I left the aircon off to get used to the heat. Crossing the NT border, Sign reads speed limits in NT are 110kph unless otherwise stated Within 10 metres sign says 130kph! Leaving the aircon off was ok but I also had the window down so I now have one dark brown arm and one whie one! Also played Bob Marleys Legend CD at full blast. Stopped about 1 hour from Alice in Stuart wells beautiful litle pub with NO FLIES??? Another long cold drink then on to Alice To stay at The Swagmans Rest Motel complex ownened by very nice guy John who supplied me with 4 cans of ice cold VB Tips for anyone planning same journey 1/ Fly! 2/ Bring two spare wheels ( I didnt need to change a tyre but could have done ithout the worry) 3/ Do not watch Wolf Creek 4/ Consider flying really! 4/ Bring a camera, so you dont have to write all this stuff! 5/ book head for motels, its worth paying a little bit more to have a courtyard room
