Sorry that this late. I hope that everyone is staying cool during the heat of the summer. If you don’t have a pool or beach to swim in why not curl up with a good book at the local library or at home? Easy readers looking for a book about summertime fun might enjoy “Zelda and Ivy The Big Picture” by Laura McGee Kvasnasky. Broken into three chapters, the book is about three friends who go to the movies, find adventure and even have a camp-in when it rains. Read in one sitting or over three sessions the illustrations and text keep young readers flipping through the pages. “The No. 1 Car Spotter and the Firebird” by Atinuke is a book geared for boys from third grade up. Older reluctant readers may enjoy this book as well. Atinuke is a Nigerian writer and this book was recently translated into English. No. 1 Car Spotter, otherwise known as Oluwalsse Babatundie Benson is known for his remarkable talent at predicting autos from far away based on the sounds that they make. No. 1 is not good at many traditional village tasks for boys but he does use his imagination to solve problems when they arise. In this short book, the reader is given several stories showcasing No. 1’s talents. “Cartboy and the Time Capsule” by L.A. Campbell is about 12 year old Hal who is given an assignment at the start of school. He must spend the year writing journal entries that might interest a person opening the capsule far in the future. This book is written as Hal’s journal entries. He writes it as if the reader is from the future and is learning about what life was like many years earlier. Hal’s interpretation of history is a bit inaccurate and humorous but it won’t get your child so confused they will fail history in the fall. I think this would be a good book for a reluctant middle school boy reader or a confident younger reader. The text is somewhat simple and there are interesting pictures and drawings throughout the book. I am always looking for good books for children.
