South Africa is going into a general election Next week on 7th May. And voters here will elect new members of the National Assembly as well as new provincial legislatures in each province. The key challenge facing the country is unemployment and the increase in poverty levels. Unemployment rates in South Africa have soared at an alarming rate. The unemployment rate in South Africa is one of the highest in the world with 36% of the population being unemployed. Levels of poverty and unemployment in South Africa are critically high, despite the countrys status as an upper middle income country. This is one of the key issues that have featured seriously in campaigns here. It is also an issue that leaders in this Country must address.
