South Africans are voting for their new government today. I - TopicsExpress

South Africans are voting for their new government today. I expect the ANC to win primarily on the basis of their record as a liberation movement as well as their record in government. I think that they do deserve another term in government. The different opposition parties, particularly the DA and the EFF mounted very inspiring campaigns. Though they dont expect to win the election, they seem to be resolute to make an impact. The DA in particular, though associated with protecting the interests of the whites, seems to have a long term vision of becoming the dominant party in the politics of South Africa. I will be watching their performance with interest. In the 2004 elections under Tony Leon they secured about 11% of the popular vote and increased this to about 16% under Zille. Opinion polls suggest that they will get about 21% in todays election. This mirrors the performance of the BCP in the 1999 elections when we secured 11% of the votes, increasing it to 16% in 2004 and 21% in the last election. The EFF has a mountain to climb. At times they behave like a youth league instead of a political party. Case in point is the address by their leader this past Sunday. I think that anything above 5% of the popular vote will be a good showing by them. I wish our neighbors well and look forward to a credible election that will make the region proud.
