South Africas Business Confidence Weakens In Q4: BER South - TopicsExpress

South Africas Business Confidence Weakens In Q4: BER South Africa business confidence deteriorated slightly in the fourth quarter, survey data published by the Bureau for Economic Research (BER) showed Wednesday. The confidence indicator for the manufacturing sector dropped to 36 in the fourth quarter from 37 in the September quarter. The agency said that the mood among manufacturers was probably dampened by the prolonged labor strikes and resulting production stoppages. Renewed pressure on profitability amid a sharp increase in cost inflation also depressed confidence. The weakening of sentiment, despite a general improvement in the underlying activity indicators, suggests that South African manufacturers need a stronger and more sustained recovery in activity before business confidence can improve meaningfully. However, the fall in overall confidence was moderated by strong increases in export sales and order volumes, BER said.
