South American defender set to arrive in Liverpool for medical Benfica left back Lorenzo Melgarejo is scheduled to arrive in Liverpool on Wednesday to undergo a medical at the club, ahead of finalising his season long loan deal. Reports in talkSPORT suggest that the Reds would also have an option to buy the 22 year old, post his loan deal, with £7.8m being the asking price for his permanent move. Melgarejo was purchased by Portuguese giants Benfica in 2011 but was immediately loaned off to Paços de Ferreira where he emerged as the top scorer in the league for the club. Upon his return to Estadio da Luz, manager Jorge Jesus converted him into a left back – a role in which he has excelled tremendously in his 39 appearances for the club last season. Meanwhile, the presence of Melgarejo at Anfield would provide added competition for Jose Enrique, who is the only first team player in that position in the squad, though Glen Johnson did spend a lot of time on the left wing last season. The player has also attracted the attention of clubs like Arsenal and Fenerbahce in the recent past, but the Reds seem to have done some good business in signing the Paraguayan.
