South Plains College will offer two courses in Certified Nurse Aide training at the Reese Center campus. The first class, June 16 through July 7, will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. in Building Two Room 206. Janet Copeland is the instructor. The second class, June 23 through July 24, will meet Mondays through Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Building Two Room 206. Mary Frances Berry will be the instructor. The cost of the course is $300 for tuition and fees. Participants can earn 60 hours or 6.0 Continuing Education Units. The textbook will be “Nursing Assistants A Basic Study Guide 10th Edition. A maximum of 10 students will be accepted. Students learn the necessary skills to work in long-term care, home health, or hospital environments. A method of instruction providing detailed education, training and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation and placement are the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Upon completion of the 60 hours of classroom and 40 hours of clinicals, each student will be required to take the State of Texas Certified Nurse Aide Competency Examination with NACES. Students now will submit their own applications and testing fees directly to NACES after completion of the class. On-site registrations will not be accepted for this course. Students must pre-register and provide proof of immunizations which includes Hepatitis B Series, 2-MMRs since 1981, Tetanus no older than 8 years, Varicella shot or proof of illness, and have a current negative TB test no older than 6 months prior to the first day of class. A flu shot will be required of all students enrolled between Oct. 1 and March 31. Valid state issued photo identification and social security card prior to enrollment (names must match on both documents and not expire before the end of class) also will be required. Students will not be allowed to register or pay for this class without all requirements being met. Criminal background checks will be performed for all students. CPR certification is required and it is not included in tuition fees. Other supplies not included in the tuition and fees are blood-pressure cuff and stethoscope. Criminal Background checks will be performed on all students. No refunds will be given for criminal background checks. The Certified Nurse Aide Clinical is a health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. This course is required for all students taking the Certified Nurse Aide class. The cost of the course is $200 for tuition and fees. Participants can earn 40 hours or 4.0 Continuing Education Units. The clinicals will be taught off campus. For the first class with Copeland, clinicals will be offered from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays from June 26 through July 9.
