South Sudan Update Where to start??? What an incredible experience... the team here is great - everyone is getting along quite well. Juba is a fascinating city - I believe it has quite a large population, but it is quite a bit less developed than you might expect. It is frustrating for the female members of the team, as they cant travel alone during the day or at all at night - I was able to travel alone (in some limited areas) during the day, and in a group at night. The hotels are small, single floor buildings and grouped in the same area (which is partly why I was able to walk around there) - each hotel has about 5 or 6 small rooms, with bathrooms (and a shower head next to the toilet) - around a shared courtyard. Each also have a small bar. The people in the hotels and many of the other trained roles tend to be from Kenya and Uganda - as there are opportunities in South Sudan for employment that dont exist in their home countries. Unfortunately, after generations of war, many of the South Sudanese have less employable skills than those in the neighboring countries. That is the primary reason that the government outlawed the riding or ownership of motorcycles by foreigners (the riding that our charity does to reach remote areas is considered acceptable - so dont worry!). From Juba, we travelled to Rumbek by plane on an airline called Kush - there was very little about the plane to inspire confidence, but we managed to land on the dirt runway without incident. The Rumbek airport was one of the more chaotic that Ive been to, very entertaining! Rumbek has been really interested - we are staying in tents at a compound called safari style - so have to make a mad dash to bring the tents on to the covered balcony each time in rains - but people here are fantastic!
