South Sudans bid to join the East African Community has taken a knock that could delay its admission, as a Ugandan traders lobby has dragged the five partner states before the regional court to block the process. The suit was filed on October 22 at the East African Court of Justice against the Attorney-Generals of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, as well as the Secretary-General of the EAC. The traders are not leaving anything to chance. “We are also filing an injunction next week to stop negotiations on South Sudan’s entry until our case is heard,” said Patrick Ntege Walusimbi, the lead plaintiff, who is also chairman of the Uganda Traders Association of South Sudan (UTASS).
