Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District Cadet Camp Thermal Station deputies in conjunction with the Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District presented the fourth annual S.C.V.C.S.D. Cadet Camp to area youth ages 12-16 from Monday, July 28 through Friday August 8. The cadet program was started in August 2011, where the youth of Mecca, Thermal, Vista Santa Rosa and Oasis attended the cadet camp over a four-day period. The program has grown to two weeks and 40 cadets. The purpose of the cadet camp is to foster self-discipline, self-esteem and confidence-building through teamwork, accomplishments, and making new friends. Cadets gain a sense of self-worth and pride. During this year’s camp, cadets participated in various law enforcement-related training, and education. They received demonstrations from the department’s SWAT and aviation units. They also visited the Ben Clark Training Center, and the Museum of Tolerance. The program is designed to bring a better understanding between the youth of the southern Coachella Valley and the Sheriff’s Department. The goal of the Cadet Camp is to provide an enjoyable experience that will be remembered by all cadets who attended and to create a lasting impression that sheriff deputies are their friends.
