Southern Marathon Series #5, Timaru, 31 August - The BIG one - 100km. 1st. 2:55:42.14 I wasnt sure how this one would go - I didnt have any let-up in my training for worlds for this event, it just had to fit in. A 100km ultra marathon was definitely new ground for me. But with a dry track we were able to set a solid pace right from the start. My strongest competition was my former teammate from Wellington. Between 50km - 65km we upped the pace testing each other out in a string of sub 4 minute laps, and setting a best lap time of 3:34 (38.9kmph). After 43 laps I finished on the right side of the 54kmph sprint to take the title, and in under 3 hours. My Garmin showed 107km - I mustve gone the long way round through the corners! :-) With 9 finishers for the 100km distance, and others completing their first 42km marathon at the same time, it was a great day out.
