Southwest Public Schools took precautions today after receiving a threatening letter in the mail. This is from Superintendent of School R. Todd Porter. Today we received a letter in the mail making threats against students at the high school in Bartley. We immediately contacted law enforcement officials from Red Willow County and the Nebraska State Patrol. The doors at both schools were locked as a precaution and law enforcement officials were present in Bartley. There is currently a criminal investigation of the individual whos name appeared on the letter. As I am sure you can understand, we cannot release any details of the investigation since it is ongoing. Our highest concern is that our students remained safe while the investigation was being conducted at a location in Bartley. Law enforcement will remain in place, in Bartley for precautionary measures for today and tomorrow. It is important that we do not give those who make these sorts of threats the power to frighten our students or to disrupt the school community. Therefore, we will be holding school tomorrow which is the last scheduled day of the semester. Although we take all threats seriously and are thoroughly investigating, after consultation with law enforcement we believe that we can safely hold school tomorrow. We do respect, however, your decision to keep your child at home if you wish. This absence will certainly be considered excused and we want you to feel comfortable with whatever decision you make. Mr. Loshbaugh , school counselor, will be available for students if they have concerns. Again, no immediate danger has been discovered but we will have members of law enforcement on campus in Bartley during the day today and tomorrow as a precautionary measure. We would like to thank the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Department and the Nebraska State Patrol for their prompt response and investigation. Our students’ safety has and will remain our number one concern. R. Todd Porter - Superintendent
