Southwest at East Central October 17, 2014 |BY ROBIN JERSTAD FOR THE EXPRESS-NEWS SAN ANTONIO — Southwest had three tailbacks hit the century mark as the Dragons ran wild over host East Central for a 34-16 victory on Friday night. Southwest piled up 426 yards behind the three-headed rushing attack of seniors Reilly Riggs (122 yards, TD) and Jonathon Cruz (129 yards, TD) and bruising sophomore Tyrone Middleton (153 yards, TD). “We knew against this football team, against East Central, we were going to have to play fast and play physical,” Southwest coach Peter Wagner said. “By God, thats what we decided to do tonight.” For most teams, a crowded backfield means players have to fight for carries. For a Southwest squad that runs more than 90 percent of the time, its a tailbacks dream. “Its all about fighting for yards,” Middleton said. “Its all about our offensive line, and were truly blessed.” Middleton added that the trio has a friendly competition going between the tackles and dont mind sharing the load — seeing as there are about 60-plus carries to go around each night. While the Dragons chewed up the clock by rolling the dice successfully on several fourth downs early, East Central running back Jauwan Hall (44 rushing yards) and quarterback Justin Upshaw-Mendoza (117 yards, two TDs) werent able to get in a rhythm until the game was out of hand. East Central looked to tighten things in the third quarter, as Roy Mora blocked a punt and Upshaw-Mendoza found Kyle Lamey wide open on the next play from scrimmage to pull the Hornets within 17-10. Lamey finished with two receiving touchdowns. But Middelton and the Dragons backfield kept wearing down the East Central defense, delivering the knockout blow on the sophomores 85-yard rumble the next drive to put Southwest up by two scores.
