In the metropolitan region including the west and north-west adjacent communities of La Laguna, El Rosario and Tegueste lives approximately half of the inhabitants of Tenerife. The port of Santa Cruz is important for container shipping, for the ferries between the islands and the mainland, and of course for the booming cruise market.
