Location & surrounding area: Santa Cruz de Tenerife is capital of the homonymous Spanish province, which includes the islands of La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomero, as well as parliamentary seat and the seat of government alternating with Las Palmas of the Autonomous Region of the Canary Islands. In the metropolitan region including the west and north-west adjacent communities of La Laguna, El Rosario and Tegueste lives approximately half of the inhabitants of Tenerife. The port of Santa Cruz is important for container shipping, for the ferries between the islands and the mainland, and of course for the booming cruise market. The excellent infrastructure of the city also includes fast motorway links to both airports and facilities on the north and the south coast of the island, a variety of bus routes and a rail to be extended in the future along the highways. The old core of the city and its parks invite to stroll and visit. Surrounding the Parque García Sanabria, for example, there are many houses with beautifully preserved colonial facades. The sights are numerous: museums (ie: the Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, or the Museo de Belle Arte) exhibitions and of course, originally designed Concert Hall Auditorio de Tenerife of the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava (the wave), the church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, Teatro Guimerá which offers events and festivals of all kinds, and much more. Main shopping street is Calle Castillo, leading to the Plaza de España. For the shopping experience there are also supermarkets, department stores and of course the daily market Mercado de Nuestra Señora de Africa in the Calle San Sebastián. Many cafes, restaurants and bars invite you to linger subsequently. Santa Cruz de Tenerife has many beautiful townhouses and apartments, but there are also in the periphery and in the metropolitan region as a whole a lot of residential areas. In the Northeast, for example, the chalets stretch to the Anaga Mountains, one of the most beautiful and unspoilt scenery of Tenerife, with many hiking trails. At the foot of the picturesque and wild scenery of these mountains lies the protected golden sandy beach Las Teresitas, which guarantees all year round safe swimming for the whole family.
