Spartans cruise over Terriers By David Vantress Twitter: @dvantressHDN LITCHFIELD - If you like playing - or watching - football in the rain, then Friday nights 8-man contest between Litchfield and Waldron was your kind of time. Waldron improved to 6-2 on the season with a 50-12 win over the Terriers on Parents Night at Litchfield. The Spartans have officially qualified for the MHSAA 8-man playoffs. Intermittent afternoon rain showers turned into a full-fledged deluge in the second quarter, but the rain didnt do much to slow down the Spartan offense. The Spartans outgained the Terriers 210-54 in the opening 24 minutes. Waldron led 44-6 at halftime, so the second half started with a running clock. The Spartans got a pair of first-half rushing TDs of 54 and 22 yards from fullback Cody Jamison. Hunter Moore also added a pair of TDs, and Waldron junior QB Abraham Fallabaum threw a pair of TD passes, one to Moore and one to Gilbert Emens. Litchfield senior QB Matthew Morgan had the Terriers first-half TD on a 5-yard run. The Spartans substituted often in the second half as the running clock was in effect. Waldron added a second-half TD on a 9-yard Fellabaum run. Litchfield got a big play for its second TD of the night, a 69-yard TD run by Morgan. On the night, the Spartans gained 315 yards, 275 of those on the ground. Waldron coach Mark Long said the staff decided to rest junior running back Jimmy Champion, who has been dealing with a deep tissue bruise. We wanted to rest him for the playoffs and some other guys stepped up, Long said. Sophomore Wade Shadbolt and junior Tyler WInch were two of those players Friday night against Litchfield. Fellabaum said he and his teammates wanted to make an early statement. We were able to get some early scores, Fellabaum said. Litchfield coach Dale Smith was proud of his teams effort. Weve got a great group of kids, Smith said. They dont give up. The Spartans wrap up the 2014 season next week at home against Flint School for the Deaf.
