Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord! Ephesians 5:19 For probably over twenty years there has been a controversy in many churches that has not only caused dissention and discourse, it has even been the result of church splits. This problem hasnt been about the Bible. It hasnt been about different versions of the Scripture. It hasnt even been about truth or interpretation. No, the thing that has been more of a distraction than anything else among church folk is the kind of music we have. Some like hymns with a hymn book, while others like contemporary music on a screen. Some like piano and organs, while others like guitars and drums. Some like a choir, while others like a band. Churches have argued about this so much that we have forgotten why we are here in the first place. Paul basically says that whether its hymns or spiritual songs, real music comes from the heart. I pray that we will all make a joyful noise today no matter what kind of music we like. If it truly is from the heart, it shouldnt even matter.
