Speaker of Niger House of Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Usman, on Monday said the house had received four memoranda against autonomy to local government councils in the country. Usman made this known while briefing newsmen in Minna on the ongoing amendment to the 1999 Constitution. He said that the submissions were from the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Niger State Independent Electoral Commission, Ministry of Local Government and the state government. He, however, explained that the assembly’s mandate was to give assent or not to 71 items listed for amendment in the Constitution. He added that a public hearing had on the constitutional amendment had already been conducted in the Federal constituencies in the state. Usman also disclosed that the house would commence its public hearing on the matter on Tuesday in order to meet the Wednesday deadline for submission of its position to the National Assembly. He stated that the assembly was in favour of autonomy to the state legislature as enshrined in the Constitution.
