Speaker stands the unknown component Every audio engineer out - TopicsExpress

Speaker stands the unknown component Every audio engineer out there is looking for the same thing. That one thing is the perfect sound. To get this perfect sound engineers spend tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. There are little black boxes that manipulate almost every aspect of the sound and most studios have dozens of them. This is all good but in the end there is only one component in your whole system that you actually hear. That component is your speaker. There is one thing that you must do before you can expect to get the best sound presentation from your loudspeakers. You must position your speakers in the exact right position in space. Without proper placement a good part of the money that you have invested in your expensive studio monitors will be wasted. There are many theories on how to set up your speakers for best sound. If you limit yourself to the top of the meter bridge or a shelf against the wall it is not likely that your speakers will be placed properly. The first consideration for proper speaker set up has to be that the speakers are elevated to the correct height. Next they must be the right distance apart in order to set up an image and soundstage. Finally the engineer must be the proper distance away from the drivers. The only real solution for proper speaker placement is a good pair of stands. Besides proper placement a good pair of stands eliminate the possibility of three major problems. These three problems are: 1. Speaker vibration transfer into the electronics. Vibrations in the mixing console will have a negative impact on the sound. This problem may not be very evident until you remove the problem. Then you will hear clarity that you never heard before. 2. Speakers on a common platform will talk to each other. This reduces overall clarity. 3. Speakers placed on meter bridges interact acoustically with the control surface. Besides the corner loading effect that the flat surfaces of the mixer create there are also multiple early reflections that bounce off the mixer.
